Online Therapy and Covid 19
During these scary and unprecedented times of social distancing and covid 19, it may be reassuring to know that you can access counselling with me through a secure, PHIPA compliant telemedicine video conferencing platform.
Are you finding that you are beginning to feel the strain of being socially distanced from friends and loved ones, or from the places you used to visit and the activities you used to love to do?
Are you feeling more stressed, or more depressed, or more anxious than usual?
Are you feeling unsettled? Is your sleep being impacted? Are you having a lot of anxious thoughts? Have your worries grown? Are you worried about money and finding yourself more anxious about the future?
Know that this is normal during this time of uncertainty and strangeness. And know too, that there is a caring and listening ear willing to offer you compassion and acceptance as you sort through your specific challenges. And you don’t have to do it face to face (although that is an option at this time). I am here for you.
How Does Online therapy work?
With a very easy to use video conferencing system, I simply sends you a link via email. You do need a webcam and mic. You click on the link and I call you in to the meeting when it is time for your session. Make sure you have privacy and can be undisturbed for the 50 minute session. Headphones can be helpful but are not necessary. Keep a box of tissues handy. Being able to see you helps me to pick on on clues like gestures and facial expression. I am also trained to understand where in the body you are holding tension and having a visual of your body language is helpful in that regard. Telephone sessions are available as a backup or if you don’t have access to a webcam. Doing therapy by videoconferencing is just as effective as in-person therapy. If you have further questions about teletherapy, please don’t hesitate to ask me.
How Online therapy can help you navigate these challenging times
I can help you manage your fears, sort through your stress and find new ways to cope in the face of uncertainty. I can be a sounding board as you work through all of this, holding space for you with compassion and non-judgment. I can help you practise mindfulness and other effective stress management techniques. I can give you tools for managing your life, so even when these tough times are over, you can move forward with greater confidence and ease. I can help you become more peaceful and calm. The tools I will give you can help you manage your stress better and keep you functioning in a crazy world.
Types of Online therapy available
I have almost three decades of experience in meditation techniques. I offer mindfulness therapy. This teaches you to focus on present moment awareness and allows you to drop obsessive thoughts of the past or worries about the future. It has the effect of calming your mind and relaxing your body. There is plenty of science to validate its effectiveness. I will teach you various breathing techniques to help you get calm and focussed.
I also offer a unique somatic approach which is borne out of my decades of experience as a stress management consultant and shiatsu bodywork therapist. I train you in a method known as body awareness and help you stay present, with compassion, to your physical and emotional thoughts and sensations. This can be helpful for pain reduction and can help alleviate physical as well as emotional symptoms, thus increasing your overall sense of well-being. There is science to support this!
Self Compassion is one of the tools I will help you learn, and practise. We may have to get through a few core beliefs to get you there, but it is totally doable! If you’ve ever felt “I’m not worthy”, or “I’m not good enough”, then this is for you!
I teach you grounding, another effective tool for coping with stress and staying “in your body”.
I offer cognitive behavioural therapy, which helps you change your “negative, automatic” thoughts to more productive ones and can help you shift emotions and behaviours also. CBT includes progressive muscle relaxation which, as its name implies, helps you to relax. Again, science supports the effectiveness of this approach.
I use a solution focussed approach which is brief, and again, as its name implies, focusses on solutions rather than problems. My goal is to empower you to be the best you can be.
Telephonic counselling
I also offer telephone counselling if you do not have access to a video camera. It is amazing how much subtle information I can pick up over the phone: your energetic quality and emotions are easily readable.
